Pick one closed room
Designate a single room — usually a bathroom or a bedroom that's already empty — as the safe room. Put pets and young kids there with water, snacks and a tablet, close the door, and tape a sign on it. Movers will work around it and load it last.
Better yet, arrange care off site
Doors stay propped open all day and animals bolt. If you can send pets to boarding or a friend's house, and kids to a grandparent, move day gets dramatically shorter and safer.
Keep routines identical
Set up children's beds first at the new house, before anything else. Same sheets, same stuffed animals, same bedtime. For pets, unpack their bed, bowls and litter box within the first hour and keep feeding times unchanged.

- Keep medications and vet records in your car, not the truck
- Walk dogs on a leash for the first two weeks in a new yard
